Coffee is King in Korea: Imports Up 45.1% in 2022

There’s a reason Korea often jokingly refers to itself as the ‘Republic of Coffee’. Coffee imports in Korea rose approximately 45.1% YoY in the first 11 months of 2022, according to the Korea Customs Service. Imports amounted to approximately $1.19 Billion between January and November 2022 and it is the first time Korea’s coffee imports have exceeded $1 Billion. 

The need for caffeine is no exaggeration with the average Korean yearly consumption of coffee amounting to 376 cups, second in the world and over twice the global average. Another incredible figure that demonstrates the country’s dedication to this deep nectar is that the number of coffee shops per 1 million people in Korea is 1,384, which is far more than the runner up country Japan at 529. The number of cafes in Korea has also been steadily, rising by 17.4% in 2022 and 21% in 2021.
